Concerning Dragons…

~I suppose I should start with some information about us dragons. Dragons are considered immortal, however to be honest, no one knows how long a dragon lives in order to be considered elderly. I have been on this Earth for five ages, or roughly five to six thousand years. There are two types of dragons: wild dragons and civilized dragons. Wild dragons are your stereotypical “burn down the village” sort. Civilized dragons however, are what their title suggests. As you can guess, I am considered a civilized dragon.

~So what makes a dragon civilized? There are a few historical differences, but I shall not bore you with those. However a few things you should know is that civilized dragons are not afraid to speak. We are often fluent in various languages and have a broad range of interests, however a dragon usually has a specified interest.

~I for example have a passion for stories. Legends, lores, epics, all of them grab my attention. I would enjoy a library if I hadn’t read all the books in them. I am considered the bard of my “clan.”

~Civilized dragons often live in clans. I am tied to the largest clan with twelve of us. Clans are often very loose structures. Often times every dragon lives on their own or with a partner, only gathering together as a clan for events, holidays, or to travel together. Dragons are more than adept to live alone, but as a surprise to many races of the Earth, we are incredibly social creatures.

~My personal abode is a cave in the mountains. It sounds suiting for a dragon, but there is more. Entering the cave, all appears as nature intended it, until you reach a thick curtain. Past the curtain, the stone walls are as smooth as marble, with bookshelves lining them set in the stone. Fine pieces of furniture for guests are placed in the room, often with a fire in the center. However I do not use this place often, merely as a shelter.

~For a dragon I am quite well respected. Kings and politicians call me to their courts to settle disputes and ask questions about the past and future. They believe I am wise, but I just give them my knowledge and opinions. The old rulers respect civil dragons, and usually the general population of the world is unconcerned with a large dragon in the market, however there is always an ignorant one amongst the crowd to start a panic. This is why I especially do not stay to long in one place or another. I enjoy traveling and helping others, and you can not help others by staying at one spot.

~However I suppose this is the cause of my sadness. As time passes and my travels continue, I watch great loves born and lived out. Stories of unconditional love surpassing all odds right before my eyes, occasionally with my assistance even. Yet watching these tales unfold, I often wonder why I can not have a story like that.

~But there is no reason for me to dwell on that, I must continue with my story…
